About Ben Flores

Crafty Rooster is a chill and folksy environment that stays abuzz with the conversation of gathering groups and the clink of glasses at the bar.

Sean Kobos, the owner, said his inspiration behind starting the business came from his desire to “create a local neighborhood bar with a great craft beer selection.”

Its name is a nod to the mascot of Coastal Carolina University, ‘’a proud and fierce rooster,’’ called “Chauncey,'' according to the university's official website.

Crafty Rooster patrons have multiple menu items from which to choose. Fried pickles, loaded Brussels sprouts, and lobster dip are among the rad appetizers.

The buffalo cauliflower with just enough boom of heat is my personal favorite and easily addictive for veggie lovers looking for hip appetizers with a bang.

Other popular items include a variety of burgers, wings, and a couple of variations of macaroni and cheese.

Distinctive menu options include the Ragin’ Rooster, a Captain Crunch-coated fried chicken sandwich served with house-made blue cheese or ranch dressing, lettuce, tomato, and provolone on a toasted brioche bun. Another handheld menu member is a soft tortilla wrap called the Everything But The Hen. It has shaved steak, grilled shrimp, bacon, mixed lettuce, tomatoes, provolone, and mayo perked up with horseradish.

The regional star, chicken bog – a rice dish featuring shredded chicken and smoked sausage – is served daily.

The seafood platter is a hit with patrons. They can choose shrimp, fish, or both. They can get their proteins fried, blackened, or grilled. The entrée comes with fries and jalapeno dill coleslaw, with cocktail or tartar sauce on the side.

“I order that all the time,’’ said Pamela O’Brien Carney via a Facebook post on Crafty Rooster’s page. “It’s (yummy). Love the fish and the fried shrimp!!”

Kobos said Crafty Rooster is different from other places with its longtime staff, cozy environment, and history.

“We wanted to create a space where guests feel comfortable wearing a suit to happy (hour) to dressing (casually),’’ he said. “We have exposed brick and exposed wooden beams that are over 100 years old. The building used to be a Coca-Cola bottling plant in the early 1900s.”
